Children of Zodiarcs is a charming little tale that fits very comfortably in the Venn diagram between tactical RPG’s and games of luck. From its simple, focused design to a flexibility in tactics with deck and dice building, Children of Zodiarcs is a unique example of how to properly revitalize the tactical JRPG with new ideas. The Square-Enix Collective has quickly become one of my favorite labels of independently developed video games, and Children of Zodiarcs is easily my favorite to date.
Children of Zodiarcs mixes a collection of disparate mechanics in just the right way. Coupled with an endearing story, fans of the SRPG genre will no doubt love playing the game’s skirmishes long after they are finished with the story mode.
As a story, Children of Zodiarcs is a little lacking, but if you don’t mind some grinding the mix of combat, card and dice system is a delight. Although some characters are less useful than others, the fights are enough to pull you through if a tactical RPG is what you are looking for.
