There’s clearly a lot of effort been invested into bringing Borderlands 2 to PSVR, and that’s appreciated. The gameplay does feel dated these days – and the lack of DLC and co-op is a real shame – but there’s still fun to be had with the loot-shootin’ loop, and Pandora scales well to virtual reality. The PS Move control scheme is cumbersome but the game plays fine with a DualShock 4 in hand, and an array of comfort options mean that you can tailor the experience to your exact needs.

Despite my desire to scream Borderlands 2 VR’s praises from the mountaintop, objectively speaking, the overall package is a bit of a mixed bag. We already knew that the game was fun as hell, and that still remains true while the visor is on. However, odd control schemes, lack of core gameplay features from previous installments, and unfortunate legacy design decisions make this holistically feel like an inferior experience.

Borderlands 2 VR is a decent adaptation of the shoot-and-loot classic. While the lack of co-op, expansion content, or control over the difficulty settings is disappointing, the overall experience is positive. It’s best played with the DualShock 4, as the Move controllers simply aren’t good for shooters, and the absence of Aim controller support feels like a major oversight.

Borderlands 2 VR is exactly what you think the original would be like in the early days of virtual reality. It never does anything to separate itself from the pack of decent VR adaptions, but, can provide a fun point and shoot experience once you get accommodated with your preferred controls and comfortability settings.

The small gameplay tweaks aren’t enough to rewrite a game that was designed around four-player co-op, but the core of the experience is so strong, rewarding, and entertaining that it serves as a feature-rich and exciting VR shooter in its own right despite its flaws. If you’re looking for a PSVR game to really sink your teeth into with dozens of hours of content, then Borderlands 2 VR is still an easy recommendation.

In the end, the parts that work well, even the driving mechanic allows for a first-person view, all add to a very engaging VR experience. Getting to explore Pandora and interact with all the various characters and creatures in scale is a helluva lot of fun. Hopefully, the rumors of forthcoming DLC and Aim support will materialize down the road. In the meantime, it’s time to lock, load, loot, and explore Pandora!

Borderlands 2 VR is a lot fun when everything works, so it's definitely worth a consideration if you've always dreamt of actually being on Pandora. Just remember that you need a strong stomach as the shift over to virtual reality is far from flawless. 2D elements ruin the immersion and might force you to think about what you're doing, while a generally lacklustre frame-rate warrants bundling the game with a bucket for those of you who get queasy when playing in virtual reality.

The exceptionally witty writing that regularly knocks on the fourth wall is a bonus that’s somehow brought to life by feeling as though you’re actually there on Pandora with its cast of mock-savage weirdos. If you’re a PlayStation VR owner and enjoy first person shooters you may be seeing less of your family than planned this Christmas.

Borderlands 2 VR takes a beloved classic game and gives it new life in VR and does so in a way that doesn't feel gratuitous. With a level of user controls that should be standard for all VR games, Gearbox has taken great care to provide a unique experience for those prone to motion sickness as well as seasoned VR users. Despite lacking Aim controller support, DLC content, and co-op, Borderlands 2 VR is one of the most enjoyable shooters on the PSVR.

Hopefully 2K feel the port is worth some post release development time to clear a few of these issues. As it stands this VR port is one very odd duckling, certainly not aimed at the majority of the 13 million people who made the game a success, but more a statement of what can be achieved working with a very limited goal in mind, similar to the release on Vita way back when.

Even with all of the traversal, comfort and controller options, the experience just doesn’t comfortably translate to VR – especially when so few adjustments have been made to the gameplay to accommodate it. Ultimately, Borderlands 2 VR is just another circle shaped game trying to fit into the square shaped hole that is VR
