The truth is, there’s not much to The Hidden Ones. It’s just more Assassin’s Creed Origins. Is that a bad thing? Considering that it adds a substantial amount of “more”, and that Assassin’s Creed Origins was already a fantastic game to start with, the answer to that is no. In fact, it’s a great thing. If you enjoyed the base game and at any time said “I want to spend more time in Egypt with Bayek”, then you’ll enjoy this expansion.

The Hidden Ones doubles down on everything that made Assassin's Creed Origins an excellent experience, providing an expansion that you will love if you enjoyed the base game.

Assassin’s Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones is probably exactly like you expect – it offers more of everything you liked about the base game, but it won’t surprise you or offer anything revolutionary (that will apparently come with the next DLC, The Curse of the Pharaohs, in March). For $9.99 US, you get 2-3 hours of new main quest to play through, and maybe another 5 or 6 hours of side quests and diversions.

Assassin's Creed Origins' first downloadable content, The Hidden Ones, takes players to a brand-new region and continues Bayek's story. If you were expecting something vastly new and different from this DLC, temper your expectations, as The Hidden Ones is just more of the same. More fortresses, more targets to kill, more Stone Circles, more treasure, and more levels. It's good enough for the price, but it lacks something new to make it really great.

Assassin's Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones is a rock solid expansion to a great game. It doesn't try to surprise or break the mould, but that's fine when the core gameplay remains this strong. For fans of Origins this is a no-brainer -- the story successfully builds upon the existing narrative, and there are some really enjoyable missions to sink your hidden blade into.

A lot of what The Hidden Ones gets right is its ability to take familiar concepts from Assassin’s Creed Origins and make them feel new again by means of a new purpose, a new story, and a new creed. A new direction to the story that makes Bayek more relatable, high-level combat keeps quests challenging even when you’re fully leveled up, and a more rewarding pace of loot provide an opportunity to feel something new without straying too far from what I loved about Origins in the first place.

Assassin's Creed Origins: The Hidden Ones it the ultimate example of "more of the same." Honestly, the core gameplay is as good as the full game and, in places, it's even better, with some real highlights.

It wasn’t all good though, since it brought in new glitches. While running around climbing up mountains, as you do, I found a few glitches. My favourite was when the mountain looked like it was eating Bayek. Another one, I slid through a small gap and got stuck in the middle of a building until I moved enough and managed to get free.

At the end of the day, The Hidden Ones provides us with a nice continuation of the main story, one that will appeal to those fans who felt like there wasn't enough focus on the origins of the brotherhood in the main game. It's largely a case of more of the same content, and the environments, while striking, are a bit mundane compared to some of the spectacular vistas seen in the main game. Still, it's good value and if you're looking to spend more time with one of the best games of 2017 you should definitely look into The Hidden Ones.
