Still, I think of how The Devil Inside essentially is a film with no third act. By the same token, ACC: China never really lets the itself soar. Everything feels deliberately muted. And that leads Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China being ultimately just as forgettable as The Devil Inside.

Chronicles' passive pacing is a shame, because the pieces, combat notwithstanding, are mostly strong. Furthermore, the exquisite environments craft a setting that makes me eager to see the two upcoming sequels--Chronicles: India, and Chronicles: Russia--in action. If they follow in Chronicles: China's footsteps, they will be beautiful to behold. I hope, however, that unlike the first entry, they take the leap of faith required to make them play as boldly as they look.

Chronicles: China is the smartest twist on the assassin's creed formula yet. These bad levels are only a fraction of the game — a few five-minute scenarios out of the five or six hours total that Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China offers. If you're willing to look past that, it twists the Assassin's Creed formula in one of the smartest ways I've seen since the franchise started. It's also almost certainly my favorite stand-alone game from the series in years.
