Speaking of difficulty, boy howdy does the AI have some serious teeth. I found myself having to replay sections numerous times, with each respawn resulting in a slightly more boiling rage. Thankfully the fury would subside once a tough area was cleared. An encounter may have been challenging, but hot damn did it make success all the more satisfying.
Just being graphically good to look at isn’t nearly enough to save Apex Construct. From a story that goes nowhere to gameplay that’s more frustrating than fun, Apex Construct does not feel ready for prime time. While VR could use some more options for full FPS games, this isn’t really what it needed. Hopefully next time the construct will actually be the apex.
Apex Construct has a few too many niggling issues to be considered truly great but still remains a VR adventure you should absolutely undertake. It’s a rare chance to jump into an expansive journey and become a part of an engrossing world, warts and all. It proves that VR developers can now deliver the adventures we dreamed of having when we first picked up our headsets. The next step is to refine them enough to keep us believing we’re really there. For now, though, Apex Construct will do just fine.
