Airheart: Tales of Broken Wings has potential but without a solid story powering it forward and lots of tedious grinding, you’ll struggle to see it through to the end. While the game is visually stunning and at least exciting in principle, Airheart never quite takes flight.
Airheart: Tales of Broken Wings is an interesting take on the rogue-like genre and a unique take on fly fishing. Unfortunately, the basic gameplay loop and the need to constantly return to base creates a tiresome grind. The lack of even a basic tutorial of the benefits of using your harpoon on various items, using your workshop to craft, or the fact that there is a perma-death mechanic creates frustration. If you can push through the grind and annoyances, there is a game here that could hold your attention for a long time if you enjoy the basic gameplay loop.
Airheart will appeal to those who enjoy learning a game’s systems by trial and error. The bizarre-sounding concept of skyfishing is ridiculous when first seen, but quickly feels almost natural. The slower pace of fishing mixed with the frenetic action of twin-stick shooting can make for a unique experience. However, a steep learning curve and threat of permadeath will likely put some gamers off.
