Yakuza 4 is technically flawed but utterly captivating. Its melodramatic tale is supported by a believable cast of interesting and likable characters. Despite its evolutions being slight, Yakuza 4 is potentially the best game in the series — even if its narrative does take one twist too many.

Yakuza 4 is a long and rewarding game, delivering much more of the outrageous brawling and equally outrageous melodrama that are staples of the series and introducing three memorable new protagonists who can each stand proudly beside the charismatic Kazuma Kiryu. The unusual combination of flavors Yakuza 4 serves up won't be to everyone's tastes, and some elements work better than others, but if you have an appetite for over-the-top action and intense emotion, you can find satisfaction on the streets of Kamurocho.

What a game. I passed a few dozen hours leading a contingent of scumbags-with-hearts-of-gold through a convoluted gangster soap opera full of betrayals, redemptions, posturing, overdramatic gestures, and profoundly awkward dates, and played Boxcelios 2 in the Club Sega arcade on Theater Square when I didn't feel like doing any of that stuff. Even if you never think of Kamurocho as a real place, it's a great place to hang out.
