It often seems like Yakuza 4 is conspiring against itself, holding its own cool features back behind technology and game design. It’s not that Yakuza 4 is a bad game, but rather that too many of the game’s eccentricities don’t work in its favor. Still, If you love the idea of watching Japanese men rip their shirts off, flash their elaborate back tattoos, and charge at each other while shouting like a wounded bobcat, then I can’t recommend Yakuza 4 enough; if you're that sort of person, this is exactly the kind of ridiculous Japanese drama you’ve been looking for.

If you're looking for something completely different, then Yakuza 4 will give that to you in spades. However, do not go into this game expecting it to be a familiar game with a unique Yakuza-based plot. This may be one of the last games of its ilk to make it to North American shores. If you're a fan of this type of game, then you are obliged to run out and buy it. Advertise it to your friends and spread the word. It's do-or-die for Japanese game design.

Yakuza 4 is a long and rewarding game, delivering much more of the outrageous brawling and equally outrageous melodrama that are staples of the series and introducing three memorable new protagonists who can each stand proudly beside the charismatic Kazuma Kiryu. The unusual combination of flavors Yakuza 4 serves up won't be to everyone's tastes, and some elements work better than others, but if you have an appetite for over-the-top action and intense emotion, you can find satisfaction on the streets of Kamurocho.
