About this game

Developer: Team Ninja
Content Rating: Mature

The ninja are the most elite of warriors, exercising unparalleled skill, precision, and lethality for centuries. Only the most deadly candidates are given the rare and coveted opportunity to join the clan. The final test of a ninja’s training is to face a true ninja master in combat. For years, Yaiba was that final ninja. But after suffering the indignity of serving a clan led by the weak-willed and spineless, he decided he had had enough. It only seemed natural to him that he should claim the spines they had no use for. Among his confederacy of cowards, the weakest of all in Yaiba’s eyes was the “legendary” Ryu Hayabusa.

It takes us two dozen retries to decide to forget everything we’ve learned in the past decade of Ninja Gaiden games.

There's little challenge, above and beyond cheap enemies somehow sneaking in counter or stun moves, and on the whole combat is akin to a whole room of people talking over each other. There's a lot of noise, but no-one really knows what is going on. Team Ninja has, essentially, taken away anything that made the series so successful in the first-place.

Gaiden games have always been challenging, but they’ve also always been fair. Yaiba is not. Instead, it’s unbalanced and arbitrarily punitive, and after the first few hours, it’s not worth putting up with anymore.
