About this game

Developer: Level-5
Content Rating: Teen

White Knight Chronicles is an epic fantasy tale about two kingdoms in midst of a longstanding war. The King of Balandor, wishing to put an end to the war, invites the duke of Faria to his castle to celebrate his daughter's coming of age. But this celebration is sabotaged by the Magi, a rogue sect seeking to steal the White Knight, an ancient weapon of war sealed beneath Balandor castle, in order to take over the world. During the ensuing chaos, a young man named Leonard accidentally unlocks the power of the White Knight as he attempts to save the princess. With the kingdoms in chaos and the princess in peril, Leonard is entrusted with the mission to find the Magi and rescue the princess.

White Knight Chronicles was a disappointment for me, especially coming from a quality developer like Level-5. Some of the studio’s trademark customization helps to give the game some legs, as does its hefty multiplayer component. However, for interesting combat, deep characters, and an engaging fantasy, I’d look elsewhere.

White Knight Chronicles isn't a bad game; there's a decent amount of content on offer and some interesting innovations, but - and returning to this ongoing theme of expectation - it should have been something better. Level 5's last big RPG was the fantastic Rogue Galaxy, a game that truly pushed the boundaries of the genre on the PS2, and White Knight Chronicles feels like a giant step backwards from that.

With all my criticisms on the table, it might be easy to dismiss White Knight Chronicles as an awful game. It's not. But it certainly isn't as good as the developer's previous efforts, and the few intriguing plot twists and smart ideas that went into this title just can't save it.
