Tales of Xillia is not a genre defining game, nor is it the best of the series, but it offers enough variety and charm to more than make up for its flaws. There’s a lot to do and see in Xillia, and despite its linearity, you’ll likely want to return to its world to earn that last title or finish that final sub-quest.

Despite being nearly two years old, Tales of Xillia is still very much an engaging and sprawling entry into the wide world of Tales stories. It struggles to find its footing here and there, but it manages to straighten up thanks to the help of genuinely likeable dialogue snippets, addictive battles, and a slick character augmentation system. This might not be the first Tales newcomers should look into, but newbies and vets alike should find plenty to love here.

Tales of Xillia is certainly a solid game, but it feels like it could have been better. The visuals are fantastic, the combat is great, and the characters are wonderful, but the lacking story presentation and exploration elements drag down what could have been one of the best JRPGs on the PlayStation 3. Tales of Xillia 2 has already been announced for an English release, so there is hope that the sequel will fix this game's issues, but for the time being, we have the original game in all of its fun-but-flawed existence.
