Summary

Street Fighter x Tekken makes history as fighters from these two bastions of the fighting genre come together for the very first time. Utilizing the same 2D viewpoint and technology that powered Street Fighter IV, this game allows for Tekken characters such as Kazuya Mishima and Nina Williams to make the transition into the Street Fighter universe having been re-imagined using Capcom's much-loved art style. Their looks may be different, but these characters have retained their own unique characteristics and signature moves as they go head-to-head with classic brawlers from the Street Fighter franchise in what promises to be an explosive match up.

Under it all, Street Fighter X Tekken is still a very capable fighting game. Even though there might be a little too much going on, the fighting is solid and just works. Whether or not this game will continue to be played in the tournament scene is irrelevant to the fact that you (and your buddies) could get totally invested in this new game.

Capcom has often been accused of iterating on its fighting games too much, with SFXT that’s definitely not the case. This is a fighting game which truly innovates in a number of key areas. It attempts to make it easier for newcomers to find a path into the myriad options and tactical load-outs without sacrificing any of the complexities which could make this a viable long-term option for the tournament scene.

As an experiment and a sequel, though, Street Fighter X Tekken is still a resounding and admirable success, and further proof than Ono-san is hiding true genius behind those scruffy cords and pudgy cheeks. In this battle of Street Fighter and Tekken, Capcom has landed the first knockout blow. I can't wait to see how Namco responds.
