I went into Sniper Elite V2 with one desire: Disfigure Nazis from hundreds of meters away. The game delivers on this core mechanic beautifully. While I would have preferred enemies with less superhuman vision and better stealth options, at the end of the game I couldn’t recall a scenario I didn’t enjoy. Sniper Elite V2 is a must for anyone interested in a smart shooter with an emphasis on gore.
A few imperfections prevent Sniper Elite V2 from being the perfect tactical shooter, but we’ve thoroughly enjoyed the change of pace that stealth play brings in the wartime environment. While the inconsistent A.I. can be distracting, and the occasional problem with hit detection can be frustrating, it’s a game that rewards patience well and there’s nothing more satisfying then clearing an area of a dozen enemies with a round of carefully-placed headshots.
Sniper Elite holds just as many pleasant surprises as it does disappointments. Despite the well-done gunplay and unique aesthetic flares, there are simply too many areas in which the game feels underdeveloped. Without a sound stealth mechanic in place, you never feel as empowered as you ought to, the absence of a HUD or any sort of tactical overlay coating on an additional layer of fragility.
