There’s one caveat: the more powerful you become, the more likely you are to notice one of Prototype’s central flaws: the controls are great for blasting around like a high-speed madman, but they can be a tantrum-inducing bastard when you need them to be precise. If you’re trying to scale narrow surfaces (like the pinnacle of the Empire State Building, for example), you’ll need to take it extremely slow if you don’t want to leap out into space – and even then, Alex might inexplicably hurl himself off the building with no input from you.

Prototype looked like it was going to be a hell of a lot of fun each and every time we saw it over its extended development, and it is fun, just not all the time. The combat can grate at times, the stealth elements grow tiresome quite quickly, and from time to time the game just doesn't know when to give you a break – there's so much going on that it's hard to see a way past a mission that's been sending Mercer to an early grave over and over again.

From its old school design to its gameplay struggles, Prototype resembles a superhero who leapt off a building only to realize he doesn't possess the power to fly. I hate to say it, but picture a frustrating Spider-Man game, and you have a good idea of what this experience has to offer.

That's a word that can be used to describe almost every aspect of Prototype, and although there's no multiplayer component, you're free to remain in Manhattan long after you've beaten the story or, if you prefer, go through it a second time while retaining all of the powers that you already unlocked. Prototype is good enough that you'll almost certainly want to keep playing either way, and even if you don't, there's more than enough fun to be had here in a single play through for us to recommend the game without hesitation.

Prototype is really all about player empowerment, ramping up the number and intensity of larger-than-life superhero abilities consistently as you go. If you've ever harbored fantasies about soaring over skyscrapers and going on destructive urban rampages involving wantonly thrown automobiles--and who among us hasn't, really--odds are you'll find a lot to like about this game.

All in all, Prototype is one of the best games to release this generation and is definitely the best game to drop in 2009 (so far). Outside of the lackluster stealth and disguising mechanic, the brutal combat, huge open-world, varied challenges, and utterly satisfying gameplay makes this a must-have title for any serious gamer's collection. Get ready to put your life on hold!

I have to say the sheer epic feeling you get from the game makes it worth trying but it has a number of flaws, almost entirely involving a lack of polish. Extra work could have easily brought the game up from mediocrity and onto the doorstep of true greatness. Having fallen well short of that though, I would say anyone who finds the idea of being a superhero an appealing concept will probably be happy with a purchase, but for those who are just looking to pass the time with an interesting action game you may want to stick to the rental on this one.

Prototype is so much better than its "rough around the edges" look. In fact, in some ways it works perfectly with Alex Mercer's rugged antihero abilities. Prototype isn’t the complete sandbox package, but it does offer dozens upon dozens of hours of unscripted and explosive fun. Becoming an awesome one-man killing machine doesn't get much more satisfying than this.
