After working my way through the multitude of options and modes this game has to offer, I can say conclusively and with confidence that while there’s still a few wrinkles to work out in the combat system, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is an outstanding example of an approachable fighting game that surely deserves your consideration, and easily earns the right to step into the winners circle and stand with the big boys.

For those that own a PS Vita and PS3, All-Stars is a no-brainer. You get two games for the price of one, and it could be the best game on the handheld all year. Standing alone on the PlayStation 3, All-Stars is more of a mediocre experience. It doesn’t have the charms that Smash Bros does, nor does it have the deeper single player modes, but its a decent first effort nonetheless.

It’s hard to deny that PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is fun, but it’s not “the golden fix” to the Smash Brothers formula that some gamers are hoping it is. It’s just another party-style fighting game that can be tweaked to be more or less random and chaotic, just like every other Smash clone before it. But unlike other Smash clones that you may have played, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale isn’t a quick crossover cash-in. It’s a well-thought-out game with responsive controls and a magnificent roster.
