Summary

This visualizer app by iconoclastic developer Q-Games and designer Baiyon allows gamers to express themselves via PlayStation Move. From the crazy, ambient, mellow world which only exists within the mind of Baiyon, PixelJunk 4AM reflects a huge departure from previous PixelJunk titles by putting the power of creation directly at your fingertips.

Utilizing the PlayStation Move motion controller and its full range of motion, players can use PixelJunk 4AM's unique Virtual Audio Canvas to mix tracks and experiment with audio effects to create breathtaking compositions they can share and broadcast to anyone and everyone!

In the end I think PixelJunk 4am's watchable performances are a fun distraction. Picking up the controller and experimenting with the music can result in some great sounds, but maybe streaming a performance isn't your thing. I'm more interested in listening to someone else's performance in the background, since using the Move controller as an instrument can get tiresome.

Although PixelJunk 4am may have a lack of traditional game elements, that same lack of traditional game elements is what makes it great and one of the most fascinating and intuitive experiences available for PlayStation Move. Anyone who thinks that Q-Games’ music experience is for them should definitely consider it up, as the odds of them being disappointed are slim to none.

But 4am is too obfuscated for serious music producers who will grow frustrated at the limited number of samples and the lack of visual feedback over which tracks and effects are active at any one time. And the experience is also too inscrutable for beginners, who will find themselves lost in the matrix of noise, unsure of how it may be truly directed or tamed. A fascinating toy, then, but a toy nonetheless.
