I'd say the Mass Effect 3 Citadel DLC is the add-on to acquire. It's full of fun and feel-good moments. In fact, I'd say that it's so good that it makes up for the lack of a happy ending. Sure, the world's coming to an end, things look grim, and, depending on your choices, Shepard won't come out of this alive. But until that happens, we'll enjoy some fluff and plan a rocking party.

In the end, that's what Citadel is all about. No matter your feelings on where the journey ended up, the ride was worth it, and it touched gamers in ways we'll still be unraveling years down the line. Mass Effect will be remembered not for its hybrid shooter-RPG mechanics, nor even for the lore and codex entries that created a galaxy worth exploring. Mass Effect will be remembered for the way it made us feel—for the characters that captured our hearts—in a generation that harbored the genesis of powerful, emotive gaming experiences. Citadel cements this legacy.

It's a real shame that Mass Effect's legacy feels doomed to be That Ending, when this DLC far more appropriately sums up why the series meant so much to so many. Citadel doesn't change the destination, but it does offer a fantastic second chance to celebrate the journey and remember why it was worth taking. When one of Shepard's crew marks the end of both it and this era of Mass Effect with a version of "We've had a good ride," it's not only Earth's greatest hero justified in taking a last lingering look at the Normandy and the amazing universe behind her, and quietly replying: "The best..."
