Summary

Major League Baseball 2K9 offers fans improved two-step Precision Pitching controls, deeper Swing Stick batting and quick fielding responses for even greater control of the game. The improved batting controls provide the ability to influence hits with timing and aim, improved hit distribution and variety to deliver more hit types including spray shots, pulls, line drives and long bombs. With more than six years of scouting reports infused into the action on the field, Inside Edge produces remarkably accurate player tendencies to ensure players react to in-game situations as they would in real life.

Either MLB 2K9 shipped in a half-finished state or the developers have never seen a baseball, much less thrown one around. You can see that the foundations have been laid for what could be a creditable baseball game, but design screw-ups render playing it an exercise in frustration that grows more bothersome every time you hit the diamond.

I was hoping that 2K would build on last year's foundation. Instead, the foundation has been altered to be more appealing to the masses. That's difficult logic to argue with, but 2K's approach is way off the mark.

We've rarely been so conflicted about a baseball game, but MLB 2K9 is a paradox. It's undeniably fun and accessible, offering plenty of addictive options for hardball fans. It also suffers from too many gaffes that are impossible to ignore. As the only MLB sim option for the system, 360 owners could certainly have it worse.
