Guardians of Middle Earth is a surprisingly good MOBA on consoles, suited well for veterans and newcomers to the genre alike. The Lord of the Rings franchise is a match made in heaven for online battle arena games, and fans will get their fill of iconic characters to choose from. While the game does have its shortcomings, it’ll keep you coming back for more with its deep progression system and balanced gameplay.

After spending a fair amount of time in the game, I can safely say that it came across without a hiccup and what we were given was a well executed and fun experience. The abilities fit each character’s play style to perfection and playing against AI Guardians doesn’t diminish the fun. The game can be purchased retail or digital and, with a season pass available, you can expect plenty of reasons to come back for more.

It's too bad, because when you manage to get (and stay) in a game, it really is a shining example of a pure MOBA being brought over to the console space. And between the simplified controls, easy to understand Guardian Belt system, and the optional timer for matches, it's also one of the best ways to get into the genre. All while not losing a single bit of the intensity that MOBA players have come to expect. It's just too bad such a solid game can be made occasionally unplayable by technical issues.

Guardians of Middle-earth is an excellent game hobbled by bad network performance. I am continually drawn back to the exceptional gameplay, only to be repulsed by a disconnection or unbearably long matchmaking queue. I can see myself playing this for months on end if and when Monolith solves the lag and connectivity problems.

Overall this is the best attempt seen on the PS3 for a PC-like competitive strategy game that does not require the use of a mouse and keyboard. Monolith needs to fix the current connection issues, but once they are fixed don’t be surprised to see a healthy competitive scene emerge for this game or see it at a Major League Gaming event near you.

Guardians of Middle-earth just doesn’t seem to have the lasting appeal it needs to, and it overcompensates for this by whitewashing itself with a thin coat of Tolkien paint. Don’t get me wrong, it does a lot of things right, and it does several things brilliantly. Unfortunately, this is a genre that requires a healthy community, and it’s hard to be optimistic about that here.

Here's a game that feels propped up by its license rather than in love with it. It's difficult to imagine how Guardians of Middle-earth would define itself without that signature art and Gandalf shouting "You shall not pass!" on a regular basis. But while it doesn't dazzle, this game does offer something for everyone. For salty MOBA fans, here's the genre you love in a new, bantamweight shape. For anyone new to the genre, here's an easy chance to see what the fuss is about.
