In the future, the world is a changed place. Technology has advanced. Countries have merged into massive geopolitical blocks. But one thing, sadly, remains the same – humanity's appetite for war. When a terrorist attack destroys one of the U.C.S.’s prized orbital elevators, the military is mobilized to eliminate the threat. Dylan Ramsey, a young engineer, finds himself quickly caught in a swirl of destruction, conspiracies and crumbling alliances...

Front Mission Evolved brings the classic Front Mission franchise into an action-packed third-person shooter that gives players full control of a massive humanoid war machine -- the wanzer. Choose from dozens of weapons and parts, including weapons that can be equipped on both hands and shoulders, to customize your wanzer and blast your way to victory. When you think you’re ready for a new challenge, join the ranks of online pilots for multiplayer battles.

These problems aside, there is a genuinely good time to be had with portions of Front Mission Evolved, provided you bring with you a certain love for mechs. It’s probably not the high point of the series, but fans of the Front Mission universe and/or giant robots might find something to like here.

With the strategising gone, all that's left is a poor narrative and mediocre shooting. Only the most ardent franchise lovers are going to defend Evolved - they would have much preferred another SRPG. Ultimately, Front Mission Evolved is another case of needless westernisation, something that Square Enix is becoming increasingly guilty of.

Front Mission Evolved is a bold risk, a gamble, and a new direction for the series. Unfortunately the negatives outweigh the positives making a purchase a tough decision when games are expensive. The good elements however aren’t good enough, there just aren’t that many of them. I know that’s overly simplistic, but from one fan to another, that’s the best way to describe it.
