The series still suffers from bad defense in the box and pre-determined animations. The manual controls can help, though. FIFA 13 captures a lot of the passion and pageantry of world football, but beneath the surface its gameplay flaws can hinder the beautiful movements that truly make the sport great. FIFA 13 has a lot of recommendable features, and only a few problems hold it back.

This is the blueprint for how EA Sports creates successful football games, and we didn't even touch the strengths of multiplayer (here's a hint: playing with real life opponents is awesome). But if you do play FIFA 13, you'll probably say it's the best FIFA game ever. That's saying a lot, too, because FIFA has historically been as solid as you can get. The gameplay is more realistic, adding weight to the action without feeling sluggish.

So FIFA 13 is a refinement of a winning formula rather than an entirely new equation. While the gameplay changes are more subtle, they really consolidate upon the success and innovation of FIFA 12. But that success hasn’t bred laziness – there are new features, new services, even new leagues. If you’re a fan of the sport or FIFA in general, it’s hard to imagine a game that you’ll enjoy more this year.
