A prequel to the original Drakengard, Drakengard 3 transports players to a medieval world where six sisters wield special magical abilities as the "Intoners." These sisters have brought peace to the earth with their power to manipulate magic through song. As the story progresses, players find themselves in a battle to unravel the mystery of Zero and learn her true intentions.

While I suppose the game is good for mindless fun, with a solid voice cast and some salty language, it’s ultimately just a mash-fest of murder and mayhem. This Zero lady is pissed, her sisters fight back, and lots of dead bodies clog the river of blood. Everything from the controls to the graphics are just okay. Some of its lazy touches recall a PS2 relic that was better off being pretty on older hardware.

While the repetitive combat and atrocious performance issues make Drakengard 3 very difficult to recommend, its characters and story, along with a fantastic OST, makes me feel that there may very well be an audience for this wonderful mess of a game, myself included.

I love how the only voice of human sanity is a nonhuman. I love how I can step away and think about how the concepts introduced in the alternate ending paths symbolize abstract concepts of gaming. I love Drakengard 3, warts and all. In fact, I think the warts might be part of what makes the game so appealing. It's a heavily flawed game, set in an ugly world and filled with despicable people. And yet, somehow it's beautiful.
