Disgaea D2 is the most intuitive, inviting, and enjoyable Disgaea installment in quite some time. It might not be as feature-laden as the previous game, but the tweaks to combat and militia micromanagement make it easy to jump in and create the army of demonic demigods you've always dreamed of. If you've strayed from the Disgaea fold for a while--or you've just been waiting for Prince Laharl's triumphant return for the past 10 years--Disgaea D2 is a great return to the daily grind of netherworld life.

Stepping back into the item world again and getting sucked in for level after level felt like putting on a favorite pair of shoes that never wore out. After some entertaining but hollow-feeling detours for the franchise, D2 puts Disgaea back where it belongs: the top of the strategy-RPG heap. Its ongoing tendency to reuse old, familiar visuals keeps it from being a revelation, but mechanically, this is the most finely tuned, feverishly addictive entry in the five-game series. I came with time to give, and a healthy appetite for old-school grinding, and just as its predecessor before it, Disgaea D2 took me for every free hour I had.

Newcomers to the franchise may want to delve back into Disgaea's archives before trying their hand at D2 in order to better acquaint themselves with the three main characters, but after a few hours eliminating demons on the battlefield, you'll soon be up to speed with all of the tactical gameplay delights that the series has to offer.
