The extent of DeathSpank's content is a timely nod at the current state of the downloadable games market; but it's also the game's Achilles' heel due to repetitive design. DeathSpank often leans on its writing to carry the experience, but despite its biggest marketing hook being the name of legendary video game comic Ron Gilbert, it's unlikely to illicit much more than a sympathetic smile.

DeathSpank’s mishmash of genres is definitely entertaining at first, but it never manages to live up to its appealing concept. It’s trying to combine the best parts of two beloved genres, but in doing so it creates a product that’s not as good as either. Each of its component parts has been produced with a keen eye and a loving touch, but the overall product is lacking.

DeathSpank has a hook that makes you want to keep playing it. But that alone doesn't make it a fantastic game. Its moments of brilliance are usually directly offset by its shortcomings. But if you aren't especially picky and you're on the hunt for something new to play during these slow summer months, DeathSpank's good enough to fit the bill.
