Although there are plenty of issues that I have with Cross Edge, your enjoyment of this title will ultimately depend on your familiarity with the franchises that are crossed over into it. If you know all about the different characters and have extensive knowledge of the lore behind all these different franchises, then Cross Edge will likely appeal to you. However, I am just disappointed that there is no real story beyond regular fan-fiction fodder for those who were really expecting something great from this title.

Maddeningly, despite the complexity of the battle system, the characters themselves have an extremely limited number of combat options, particularly in the first third of the game. For example, if you have Ar Tonelico's Aurica in your party, she can handle healing. No, that doesn't mean that you should direct her to heal instead of attack – that means that if you assign her to heal in battle, that's literally all she can do!

Cross Edge teaches us a very important lesson: there is a fine line between "depth" and "convolution." A game that could have been an entertaining compilation of iconic Japanese characters turned out to be a frustrating, awkward mess of menus, gameplay imbalances and annoying dialogue scenes. As appealing as this game may first appear to JRPG fans, I simply can't recommend it.
