CastleStorm brilliantly fuses various game genres into a single additive package. While the learning curve is a little bit high, and the controls can be quite finicky at times, smashing up castles is undeniably enjoyable. It’s a game where being skilled really pays off in competitive multiplayer, yet casually messing around with buddies is still just as fun. Colourful graphics, smooth gameplay, and a great soundtrack help to complete the release.

There’s an entertaining story accompanying a decent-length campaign, there’s a handful of multiplayer options, and strategy is required if you’re going to play against another person. A better way to select units to send out to battle could have been devised, because it can get really easy for all the tasks you have to do in a battle to become overwhelming. A better lobby system would have been nice as well. Overall, though, for $9.99, you get the grown-up version of smashing LEGOs together both on the go and in HD, which is exactly what the fine folks at Zen Studios promised to deliver!

CastleStorm draws from a seemingly unmanageable array of inspirations including real-time strategy, tower defense, and Angry Birds, and does so with remarkable virtuosity and humor. Touchy ballista controls may mar the gameplay on occasion, but the charms of CastleStorm's multiple gameplay modes, varied campaigns and units, and quirky presentation keep the action on track.
