Classic side-scrolling gameplay is reporting back for duty with Bionic Commando Rearmed, a remake of the classic NES game. 20 years after the 8-bit classic was released, Bionic Commando Rearmed recreates the world of the original with a complete "2.5D" visual revamp. Bionic Commando Rearmed preserves the original's mix of swinging and shooting in an intense 2D side-scroller, all to the tune of a brand-new soundtrack based on the classic 8-bit music from the NES masterpiece.

Bionic Commando: Rearmed is terrific in almost every way, revitalizing a classic but long-dormant game in an exciting way that stands on its own, but also serves as a potent reminder that there's a new retail sequel on the horizon that'll bring all this crazy swinging to 3D environments.

It's unfortunate that developer GRIN didn't put the same amount of effort into updating the gameplay as they did the graphics, but the control quirks are not enough to destroy the overall enjoyment of this well-preserved classic. Despite some questionable design decisions, the overwhelming amount of content should satisfy action fans hungry for a punishing, old-school romp.

Bionic Commando Rearmed is not a release for everyone. Less experienced gamers can lower the difficulty level, but doing this covers the harder jumps with transparent blocks. Yes, this makes the game easier, but it's also strangely embarrassing - it feels like you've been handed a set of arm bands. In any case, doing this defeats the point: it's supposed to be hard, and you're supposed to like it.
