In Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea players chose to play as either the reserved, mission-focused Shallistera, daughter of a tribal leader who embarks on voyage to find a cure for her ailing father or ambitious, energetic Shallotte, who has been struggling to bring success to the alchemy workshop since the passing of her father. While their personalities and appearance are drastically different, they both share the nickname "Shallie" and uncover the reasoning why along each of their journeys- the dual main character system has been improved with separate stories and multiple endings for Shallistera and Shallotte.

While there will be people who feel differently about the questionable removal of a rigid time structure, it is an important step towards making the series more approachable to a wider audience. Now they just need to work on the localization.

While it is disappointing that accessing the new “Growth System” causes the PS3 to crash, I’m confident an update to fix it will be out eventually. I can proudly say that Atelier Shallie has convinced me to revisit past instalments in the Dusk series directly as a player and not a watcher. If you’re looking for a new JRPG to delve into, check Atelier Shallie out. It might just fancy your JRPG needs.

While the industry seems to have moved on from both the PlayStation 3 and traditional role-playing games, Atelier Shallie: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea is good enough to bring players back. It’s less about breaking new ground or touting new features and more about just showcasing the things it does well.
