Ubisoft showed impeccable timing with the introduction of this new game engine, new character and setting for the franchise. Just when you thought that it was going to be the same old Assassin’s Creed on a yearly basis, they’ve come in and shaken things up with great results. Assassin’s Creed III is a beautiful game that’s a blast to play, with a ton of replay value in it’s multiplayer component. Is there anything else?

Give it time and Assassin's Creed III may prove itself the best experience this year. With the game's mix of a hugely interactive open world, a compelling setting, and a finely tuned combat system, I'm eager to return to delve even further into the Animus. Combining the best of the franchise so far, Assassin's Creed III doesn't disappoint long-time fans who've been with the series while also making it easy enough to jump in for the kill.

Overall, Assassin’s Creed III is a fun and thrilling wrap-up for the series. While it has its share of wonky sections--it’s bloated with too many features and collectibles, its pacing is off, and the Desmond sections fall short of expectations--it truly captures the thrills that have made the series so successful. The improvements to free-running, a sophisticated and well-realized combat system, and a gorgeous new rural playground are all phenomenal updates to the gameplay.

Assassin's Creed III is a fantastic game that's marred only by a glacial few opening hours, a surfeit of history and exposition, and the odd glitch. That aside, ACIII is a triumph and the perfect way to say hello to Connor. It doesn't quite measure up to Assassin's Creed II, but ACIII is nonetheless an American Revolution.

This is really the magic of Assassin’s Creed III. At times, you feel yourself deeply immersed in the video game elements, but at a moment’s notice you’re transported to an experience that rivals most feature films. I think it’s safe to say that players will come away from this game satisfied. In fact, the next installment—if there is one—will have some incredible shoes to fill moving forward.

Assassin’s Creed III is a step up from last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, which saw Ezio’s story overstay its welcome and made some major miscalculations with its new mechanics, but it’s still not Assassin’s Creed at its finest. It's successful at establishing a whole new world and cast of characters, and tailoring the gameplay to match that setting, which is no small feat, even if the puzzle pieces don’t fit together as well as they could.

Assassin's Creed III is very enjoyable overall, but it’s not consistently brilliant. Not everything about the game gels together convincingly and the missions’ unnecessary prescriptiveness sometimes undermines the sense of freedom that the rest of the game works so hard to create. But it achieves so much that you can’t help but respect it; no other open-world game has ever given us a setting that's as impressive to observe or as full of things to do as this.

Assassin’s Creed III takes everything that worked well in previous titles, sprinkled in a touch of Red Dead Redemption, tweaked the combat to be as smooth as Batman: Arkham City, borrowed the cinematic and character development of Uncharted 2, and polished it all off to be one of, if not the very best, game of 2012. It will be remembered fondly as one of the crowning achievements of this console generation, and offers a window to what next-generation titles may be capable of in scale, story, and wealth of content.

Generally, Assassin’s Creed III delivers most of the things that fans want. It’s a fresh new setting wrapped around the familiar core mechanics. We’ve lost the less engaging elements that they experimented with in Revelations while adding a couple of new tricks to the range of gameplay. Sneaking, running, climbing and combat have all been marginally improved but will still feel incredibly familiar and there is the usual spattering of open-world game glitches which – before the day one patch, at least – might make elements of the game incredibly frustrating for some.

Assassin's Creed III is deeper than I had time to cover here, and that's a good thing. There is simply so much to do and see that it's hard not to recommend this title, even to someone completely new to the assassins on-going battle against the Templars. However, it's also a game filled with problems that detract from the otherwise solid premise. Bugs, graphic glitches, lack of polish, and poor enemy A.I. all add up frustration, and just because a game has a lot to do, doesn't mean it's held together very well.

Assassin’s Creed III is the culmination of a story and gameplay model that’s taken five years to polish. While not perfect, it makes a convincing case for the freedom and storytelling potential inherent to games over other mediums. An overwhelming experience in its own right, Assassin’s Creed III is the crown jewel on an already excellent series, and it sets the mind reeling about the potential for where the story goes from here.

Assassin's Creed III is truly the total package. Sure, it had some persistent visual issues, and there were some things that were omitted or changed, but for every issue the game had there were 5 improvements or additions to make up for it. Connor may not be the charismatic protagonist Ezio was, but his story was as epic in this game alone as Ezio's was in three games, and the world he inhabited was not only massive but engaging.

Unlike games like Grand Theft Auto or Just Cause where half—or even most—of the fun comes from ignoring the campaign and striking out on your own, AC3’s real star in terms of pacing, variety and execution lies in its story missions.

A posséder ab-so-lu-ment !
