Gangs of Sherwood, a sci-fi take on the legend of Robin Hood, is coming to consoles and PCs this year. The game will be published by Nacon and developed by Appeal Studios, a subsidiary of THQ Nordic.
In a press release, they announced that the upcoming game is set to launch this fall, or between September and December. Gangs of Sherwood is a cooperative action game that will allow players to team up with up to four friends to take on the notorious Sheriff of Nottingham.
In addition to Robin Hood, players can choose from classic characters, such as Friar Tuck, Little John, and Maid Marian. Appeal Studios has also decided to introduce less-known characters, such as Alan-a-Dale. Like the legend itself, Gangs of Sherwood is set in medieval England, but it will be more focused on war. The creators have also decided to introduce science-fantasy elements into the game, meaning players can expect to use various weapons and powers in combat, not just bows and arrows.
According to Andrea di Stefano, the Game Director, its main story arc involves a powerful stone called the Lionheart. The Lionheart can transform any metal and give it magical properties, he added. "[It has a] big impact on combat, on the way the characters interact with enemies, and the power they can unleash, which results in explosive and spectacular battles," explained di Stefano. Aside from sci-fi elements, developers will introduce "new environments" in familiar locations
.For example, we start in the village of Locksley, which is under siege,
said Michael Defroyennes, Art Director.
We also wanted to highlight the bleak aspect of the various regions to show how the world is war-torn and how pollution from technology has impacted the environment,
he added.
Gangs of Sherwood will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
