Sadly, a few minor issues keep the game from being as consistent as it should be. Throughout most of the story, a canine companion will help you solve puzzles by squeezing into small, unreachable areas and grabbing desired items. Unlike you, though, the dog can never be hurt and will magically teleport to your side if you drift too far away, making him feel more like a tool and less like a character. It’s hard getting attached to something that’s never convincingly at risk.

By the time you've finished the four-hour narrative, you'll feel a sense of accomplishment, having weathered many of the Great War's hardships and seen the uplifting moments that make war seem the slightest bit bearable. Valiant Hearts won't redefine your whole outlook on life, but it's a powerful example of how games and real-world history can combine to give new meaning to hardships we've only read about in textbooks.

Though a highly conventional game from a mechanical standpoint, Valiant Hearts is one of those games that demonstrate how great presentation can turn the common into something remarkable. As a straight videogame, The Great War did not wow me, and yet I cannot deny the fact that it inspired an emotional outpouring from me that I quite frankly needed at the time.
