Trüberbrook« is a thrilling mystery adventure game set in rural Germany in the late 1960s. The player takes the role of young american physicist Tannhauser, who happens to end up in the eponymous village of Trüberbrook, an ageing but beautiful health resort somewhere in the densely forested countryside of West Germany. Tannhauser, while working on his PhD thesis, comes to Trüberbrook seeking to crack a tiresome mental block. But something in this town seems strangely spaced out – and instead of getting some rest, Tannhauser needs to do nothing less than saving the world.

Trüberbrook isn’t without its charm, though. Despite the dull protagonist, the game’s story is engaging, and the smatterings of humour will occasionally raise a smile. Equally appealing is Trüberbrook’s graphical style, particularly when you’re able to behold the backdrops in all their glory. But considering how many logic-defying hoops you’ve got to jump through and the company you’ll be keeping, the journey to Trüberbrook is only for the patient.

It’s not the last response players want to be left with either, as it undoes a lot of the goodwill developed up to that point. Perhaps it will encourage some gamers to replay the game in pursuit of buried explanations but the default reaction is probably going to be disappointment. What a pity. Trüberbook is available now for PC. It hits consoles, including the Switch, on 17 April.

Fans of point-and-click adventure games should give Trüberbrook a fair try, but other gamers may wish to enter with caution.
