I don’t see any reason to go back to this very attractive space travel gambler, except maybe for the greyed-out ‘missions’ option—but that's an update to come, and there’s nothing else to do right now but try and fail at a 10 turn death race. I was bored as soon as Tharsis let me win. It’s is a tough, fun game when the random events and dice rolls make it so, but its winnability is so dependent on chance that it mostly feels like losing at video poker.

The brutal difficulty is not offset with a noticeable feeling of player development and the lack of any kind of variation in gameplay and progression only heightens what ends up feeling a fairly dull experience. While ultimately not a disaster; Tharsis compares to getting to the final round and failing due to a slight miscalculation.

This is what surviving in space should be all about. But when I get to a turn where I have more fatal incidents than I do crew members, and rolling the lovingly-crafted dice does nothing but kill those crew members again and again, Tharsis feels like a sadistic game of chance that makes all my decisions feel completely meaningless.
