Tartarus doesn’t quite deliver the experience it’s aiming for. It’s light on story, but manages to make Cooper interesting and easy to identify with. The Tartarus is a crude hulk of a ship that succeeds in capturing that industrial, retro-futuristic, Aliens feel.

I wrapped up Tartarus in about six hours, and sadly I don’t think playing it again would be as much fun. I want more, though. More puzzles, more computer systems to bash through, more terminals hooked up to nuclear reactors and artificial gravity fields. But as much as I enjoyed them, there was some seriously annoying busy work between the puzzles that sours them. Whenever Tartarus tries to be about action or exploration instead of computers, it fails.

Tartarus took me a little less than four hours to complete, with most of that time being spent on two significant puzzles and then about an hour on the last act. Despite the predictable story, cringe-worthy dialogue, and bland environments, the few puzzle ideas that do work could (and should) be implemented into another game of some sort. This is a game I wanted to like.
