For others, that ideal utopia or haphazard space mess is appealing enough. Surviving Mars does cater to one group decently enough though it can be a little tough to fully get a handle on at times. While I’m not sure it has the distinct flavour that defines Tropico, the scale of Stellaris or the grand vision of Civilization, Surviving Mars does have it’s own brand of SimCity-ification that delivers in a rather satisfactory manner.
Surviving Mars, above else, is about hope. So many strategy games hold to their gameplay, eschewing any overarching themes or messages. But, as corny as it sounds, for those who believe in the majesty of spaceflight, for those who are keen to marvel at how pernicious our plucky little species can be, Surviving Mars is SimCity with soul. It shows the challenges that come along with planetary migration, but it also shows that they are solvable. With the right planning, drive, and ingenuity, we can do great things together.
Surviving Mars requires patience and experimentation that may be daunting to those new to the genre. The lack of detail on the game’s many mechanics in conjunction with the intense micromanagement creates a challenging and frustrating experience. There are ways to make your colonization mission less difficult, but a well-planned strategy still needs to be in place to succeed.
