Sunless Skies is a strange amalgamation of genres with even stranger stories to tell, but the weird world and nightmarish encounters come together to create something special. Combat and repetition may weigh down the Homeric adventure, but the overall journey is well worth the ticket.
While this is an unusual game, it’s easy to get used to its mechanics and fall in love with the rich story it garners. There was always something magical in Gothic novels and Victorian Era that it often serves as an inspiration to creative minds. The same is with Sunless Skies, although there isn’t much new from the previous games when it comes to visual aspects and gameplay. But, nonetheless, Failbetter Games did an excellent job and it’s hard not to like or at least be bewitched by this game and the universe it belongs to.
Sunless Skies isn’t just the gameplay realization of Fallen London’s dizzying kaleidoscope of lore and metaphysics, sins and souls, nightmares and inevitable terrors. It is mortality, writ large.
