Subnautica: Below Zero manages to breathe life again into a crowded survival genre. As much as I love PvP and multiplayer, Subnautica offers a more laid-back experience punctuated by moments of sheer terror. A bigger emphasis on storytelling and new characters challenges you to reach out and explore the mystery down on the icy tundra of Planet 4546B.

Even if there are a lot of shared elements between the two games and the ground-based traversal isn't everything it's cracked up to be, Below Zero's greater focus on character-driven storytelling lands well and this standalone adventure captures the unrivaled magic of underwater exploration all over again.

Listen to the roar of the current, the pitter-patter of hail splashing into the surface above, the echolocating calls of glow-whales, the piercing shrieks of creatures that you really don't want to find you. It's some of the best sound design I've ever encountered, and that I only got to it while summing up should give you some inkling of how good Below Zero ultimately is.
