The lack of challenge in Sin Slayers means you won't want to replay it, which means it kind of fails as a roguelike. That also means you’re only left with the JRPG side of things as they attempt to lure you in with promises of complex battle mechanics and a gripping story — neither of which exist here. Consequently, what you have with Sin Slayers is a game that doesn’t do anything very well. Which means it’s probably not worth playing.

In the interim, I will be putting Sin Slayers down for now, I suppose I should thank it for reminding me that there are other, more compelling, games in this genre that are worth my time. Hopefully the next time I pick up this title I won’t be overcome with feelings of what could have been, and can instead enjoy a romp of cutting down the wrathful lords of Sin.

Sin Slayers will appeal to fans of modern and classic JRPGs alike. With a simple battle system, yet complex sin mechanic, mixed with procedurally generated levels and seven distinct regions to explore, Sin Slayers never feels repetitive. Created by a small team of five in Russia, this game is a breath of fresh air in a crowded year for games. One negative is the translation of the narrator in that sometimes what he says doesn’t match what is written in the subtitles. But that’s a small complaint that never really takes away from the experience.
