About this game

Developer: Flippfly
Content Rating: Everyone

The player controls a solar-powered spacecraft as it races through a minimalist landscape with abstract shapes and various obstacles. Levels are pseudo-procedurally-generated and separated into distinct regions, each region having different sets of challenges. The ship's speed remains constant as long as the ship remains in direct sunlight, but if the ship falls into shadow or clips objects, the ship's speed will drop. Direct collision with an object will cause the ship to be destroyed and end the run. Further, if the player's ship remains in shadow too long - such as when the sun finally sets - the ship will stall and the run wil be over.

While you are zooming through the levels you will be treated to groovy trance tunes which fit the game nicely. The tunes from the game will be available eventually from Flippfly’s website under your account. As far as sound effects, there really aren’t that many, but what you do hear fits well. Sometimes less is more. Race the Sun is a fun endless runner of sorts that I can see making its way to other platforms in the future.

The smooth sensation of flight through the austere landscape is both relaxing and intense, bringing with it the joy of escaping danger and the agony of meeting with disaster. Objectives and relays capitalize on these core mechanics, building out ways to enjoy the game beyond the basic play experience. Race the Sun is compelling in a way that could make it a daily habit, with fresh challenges awaiting every sunrise for those who dare to take flight.

Race the Sun is very close to a perfect pick-up-and-play game, except for the bit where it’s very hard not to keep playing once you’ve started. A quick break easily turns into one more attempt, trying to plot a different course over the cluttered plains, maximizing Tri collection while minimizing the risk of turning into a cloud of debris.
