Summary

You are Amelia Cross, a stranded archaeologist who has mysteriously awoken among the sand swept ruins of an ancient alien landscape. Together with the distant help of another survivor, Commander Emma Sutcliffe, you must traverse and manipulate the structure of this forgotten world to find a way back home. Waking up wearing a strange suit with attached gloves, you have no prior knowledge on how you came to be in this environment. Awaiting you is a maze-like monolith, a structure that you must navigate, solving mind-bending puzzles. Use your manipulation gloves to change and adapt the architectural structure in your search to rendezvous with another survivor, finding a way off the planet. As you explore and solve puzzles to progress, thought-provoking questions about your true purpose and the origins of the structure you are navigating will need to be considered, forcing you to come to terms with a devastating truth that will shake your world.

With an increase in scope and improvements in every area, Q.U.B.E. 2 shows that Toxic Games have learnt from their experience and are doing a great job. This is an excellent title that is even better than the great game that it follows on from.

To sum up, Q.U.B.E 2 offers a fun and creative experience, but it's a little on the short side. The puzzles were a bit repetitive and not overly difficult to overcome. However, it does challenge you enough to be interesting. The variety of tasks will keep you going for a few hours and may even warrant a second playthrough (after you've forgotten all of the ways to complete them). It's a nice-looking outing and worth a punt if you like titles that require a bit of brain power, but not so much challenge that you need to be Einstein in order to progress.

The original Q.U.B.E. began life as a student project back in 2009 by a group of three classmates without any programming or development experience. The project which eventually became a full release in 2011 was followed by a Director’s Cut in 2014 that added narrative elements and minor cinematic flourishes. The same three classmates went on to form Toxic Games, an indie UK studio where work on the sequel, Q.U.B.E. 2, commenced. Available now, it represents a more ambitious and narrative driven cinematic puzzle game than the first outing.
