Early on in the sci-fi shooter Quake 4, one of your fellow space marines barks, "I do my job and shut the hell up, just like you should." This might have been the mantra of the designers, too - Quake 4 is here to kick some ass, not question the nature of its existence. That's a shame, because there's a twist to this first-person shooter that could have led to greater things; instead, the game feels uninspired and uninspiring.

Quake 4 is two great games in one, but neither of them stand out as anything that hasn't been done before. The multiplayer looks and feels too much like Quake 3, and the single-player adds military vehicles and weapons to gameplay similiar to Doom 3. But the engaging storyline, superb visuals, and high-powered weapons make Quake 4 two great games in one.

Overall, Quake 4 is kind of a weird case. The single-player is great fun, but the uninspired multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired. The end result feels like two different games. The single-player has a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to it that makes a great showpiece for the Doom 3 engine, while the online portion feels like it fell out of a time warp.
