Play as a god, ‘Pneuma’, and listen to his comical self-obsessed inner monologue whilst he takes you on a journey exploring and traversing his puzzling world in a story that can only be told through the interactive medium of video games. Rack your brain and progress through a series of environmental challenges that require perception, observation, and lateral thinking skills to succeed. Pneuma certainly isn’t a bad game, but nor is it much more substantial than a leaf being caught on the wind. Its two hours race by, and its god is pleasant enough company despite generally sounding like a first year philosophy student down the pub. Once finished though, there’s oddly little to look back on and remember but a few clever mechanical ideas.

It's a small price to pay, however, for a game that attempts - and, in a lot of ways, succeeds - in giving players a different experience to the ones that they would usually encounter, certainly on new-gen. It can appear pompous and over-reaching, and those who buy it for the puzzles alone will walk away disappointed. As a package though, it's worth checking out.

Pneuma: Breath of Life provides an interesting male lead, a gorgeous backdrop, and unique puzzles solved through the powers of perception. However, it fails to provide a nuanced story, and the one it delivers finishes much too soon. With such a surreal premise, there was an opportunity to take the journey much further and the puzzles much deeper. It's a stunning presentation, but in the end your personal judgment will be based on quality over quantity.
