There are hitches here and there in the performance, like a regular stutter every time my Druid shifted into her spirit form, but those hiccups don’t come close to breaking the experience and are certainly things that can be fixed in future patches.

If one was to ignore the technical issues and consider it in isolation, Pillars of Eternity 2 could be deemed a solid game. Whilst on the surface it appears to offer depth and choice, effectively the content is relatively simple and linear. Nevertheless, there are some great side quests and locations to engage with, and a large number of stories and peoples to encounter.

Game Skinny

Pillars Of Eternity II combines the best bits of the strategy and humor from Divinity Original Sin with the style and imagery of classic Infinity Engine games, throws in open world RPG exploration, and blends it all together with Obsidian's trademark solid character building. In short, this is going to be the RPG of the year.

Deadfire is dense, and it isn't a small game, easily dwarfing its predecessor in terms of scale. There's a lot to do, and it's easier than ever to get lost in the little stories you find, without following the arcs that the game has specially set out for you. Still, it's worth taking your time. The richness of Deadfire takes a while to appreciate, and like the brined sailors that call it come, you'll be left with an indelible attachment to these islands when you do finally step away.

Daniel Starkey May 08, 2018

But give the game a few hours, and you'll find yourself sucked into its damp, wonderful, varied world. Even if you haven't played the first Pillars of Eternity. Carefully crafted and complex, but never offensively so, Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will satisfy even the most demanding role-playing gamer.

Chris Mc May 28, 2018

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire improves upon the Pillars of Eternity formula in nearly every way, creating an RPG loaded with both strong combat and important, character-defining choices that frequently have an impact on your numerous and deep side-story adventures. A refreshingly different island setting makes it feel dramatically distinct, though travel can be laborious because of unavoidable and repetitive nautical encounters.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire hews closer to the traditions than it needs to, and some of the new concepts like ship battles simply aren’t as robust as they could be. But stellar narrative structure and writing and an interesting central threat help this sequel maintain interest across the dozens of hours it takes to enjoy a robust playthrough. We also bear witness to a studio that is still at the top of its game in crafting memorable fantasy adventures.

You'll be hard-pressed to find a title packed with more raw plot than Pillars of Eternity 2. Almost everyone has a story to tell, and that's what makes the game so unique. The main plot is serviceable enough, but the main attraction here is how fleshed out the world is. It's a great place to get lost in for 60-70 hours, and it maintains enough variety that things don't feel too repetitive.

Jason Faulkner May 26, 2018

It's always refreshing to see an RPG try something new. Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire deftly blends classic RPG fundamentals with more intriguing pirate-themed gameplay. If you enjoy RPGs, you'll almost certainly want to give Deadfire a shot.

We’re more spoiled for choice when it comes to RPGs like this than we were in 2015, which makes Deadfire feel a little less special than the first Pillars. But that’s a minor gripe in light of the fact that this is another great game from one of the best studios in the business, offering many hours of quality roleplaying.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is a sequel that plays all of its cards right. It's an enthralling adventure, both for veterans and newcomers, bringing a fantastical world to life that you'll want to explore again and again.

In Tyranny, evil wins because good is dumb. In Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire, good is too busy plotting and scheming to realize what the right thing is to do — whether in the halls of the gods or the dens, warrens, and courts of the kith. It’s at its best when you’re in these conversations, making choices like you’re in a Choose Your Own Adventure novel, drinking in the results and reckoning with each decision you make.

The influence of tabletop role playing and classic RPGs come together nicely in a vast adventure where player choices matter. And for a game that will take thirty to forty hours for non-completionists with three scheduled DLC expansions, keeping the game interesting is extremely important, which thankfully Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire has no problem doing.

Chris Shive May 08, 2018

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a lesson in sequel creation. Instead of making some slight alterations, or simply changing the setting, this smooths all the rough edges of the first game, while keeping the plot, writing, and role-playing aspect in top form. While not without flaws, and although the seafaring business is not equally awesome as the rest of the experience, this is, without a single doubt one of the best Dungeons & Dragons-inspired RPGs of the year. Kudos in spades Obsidian Entertainment!

Ofisil May 08, 2018

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a game about choices and epic story lines, grounding itself with the unique characters you find and the fact that your ultimate aim is to get the rest of your soul back. Having such a personal quest at the centre of such a fantastical plot really keeps you invested in both the people and the world, whether you’re carrying on your adventure from the first game or starting afresh.

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is as close to the perfect RPG as one can get. The fantastic setting, grand story, exceptional writing and voice acting, engaging combat all coalesce into an exemplar of its kind. This is the game that sets the bar. This is the game that needs to be aspired to.

Aron Gerencser May 08, 2018

Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire has gone and become its own game, which is very healthy development - especially as Obsidian has already unveiled plans for three expansion packs before the year is done. The studio has implemented (almost) all of the improvements fans have asked for, and the whole package is incredibly strong, which means we can confidently say that this is one of those great role-playing games that you can easily sink hundreds of hours into.

Søren Svanhof May 17, 2018

Another unapologetically old school role-player that gives its audience exactly what it wants and adds some fun pirate-themed exploration for everyone.

GameCentral May 15, 2018

It’s not all perfect, some of the difficulty spikes can be jarring and when in the thick of it issuing commands requires a tad too much micromanagement. A by product of player choice also means conversations can switch gears from hostile to friendly to neutral at the drop of a hat. An RPG of this scope could never really be perfect, but Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire has got it where it counts – story.

Kosta Andreadis May 21, 2018

Carlos G. Gurpegui May 08, 2018

Alberto Pastor May 08, 2018

Andrea Giongiani May 30, 2018

chiconuclear May 09, 2018

Elena Schulz May 08, 2018

Gautoz May 08, 2018

Mrderiv May 17, 2018

Camille Allard May 15, 2018

Gianluca Arena May 18, 2018

May 17, 2018

Z jednej strony mamy gigantów nowej generacji, jak Wiedźmin 3 i Kingdom Come, z drugiej odrodzenie przeżywają spadkobiercy Infinity Engine’u i pokrewne klimaty.
