Mordhau is an excellent new installment to the medieval hack ‘n’ slash genre, and while many will call it “Chivalry 2″, I feel it stands out on its own with its deep combat mechanics. There is a lot of fun to be had here, and while its not perfect, and I do hope some new maps come soon, it is one of the best of its genre.

Even with the struggles over the last week, the launch of Mordhau has clearly been a success for Triternion and players alike. Even as horrible as I am at the combat it is impossible to deny the melee fighting is a welcome reprieve from the usual first-person shooter or Diablo-esque hack-n-slash combat. The dev team seems intent on keeping the community updated on issues as they arise, and they have already announced they will be adding more content to the game.

All told, Mordhau has a lot to offer. Throwing yourself into the grindhouse in Frontline is crazy and chaotic and entertaining, and the maps are large and distinct enough that they are still fun to play, even after several hours. Even weeks after release, players are still probing the depths of the endlessly complex combat system. There’s no single-player element beyond fighting AI bots, however, so the length of time you’ll enjoy this game will depend on how much you enjoy its uniquely flavored competitive multiplayer.
