Men of War, the sequel to Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, takes place in Europe during the height of World War II. The story unfolds across three different campaigns played out through the eyes of Soviet, Allied and German soldiers. Each campaign has its own structured timeline bringing a different story of the war to life spanning across Russia, North Africa, Ukraine, Greece, Germany, Italy and the Pacific. The main Soviet campaign sees two student comrades, Smirnov and Kuznetzov, join the army and quickly become brothers in arms as they rise through the ranks and experience the rigors of war.

From the direct-control feature to the lovingly replicated historical vehicles, Men of War is full of well-crafted details that should make it especially appealing to history buffs. The steep learning curve alone will be enough to keep some players from enjoying everything that Men of War has to offer, but the reward for perseverance is a WWII campaign experience like no other game on the market.

Men of War is not for everyone. It's not even for every fan of real-time strategy. The high level of challenge and the more realistic handling of combat goes against many of the current conventions of the real-time strategy genre. Toss in some unreliable pathfinding and a surplus of micromanagement tasks, and even the hardcore crowd might balk at picking this one up.

The framerate is steady with smooth and realistic animations. Soldiers have faces with expressions, and vehicles display moving mechanical parts. The closer you zoom in though, the uglier it gets. Cutscenes are a welcome site, as they indicate that you’re actually progressing. The voiceovers are terrible.
