L4D2 feels like a massive upgrade from the original L4D. There is no longer time for idle threats of boycotts and should've-beens because now is the time to pick up a fantastic sequel to a great game and spend countless hours dismembering zombies while loving every minute of it.

Anyone who's complaining about this sequel being an overpriced expansion might as well hang it up; there is simply far more content by volume in this package than in the original. The core of Left 4 Dead may have lost some of its newness in the last 12 months, but the wealth of additions in this sequel ought to keep you blasting zombies and munching on brains for a good long while.

Make no mistake, this is an excellent sequel that does much to build upon the foundations of the first game; however, if there is to be a third entry in the franchise - and I've no doubt that there will be - then Valve will have to go further with its changes. But hey, that's something to deal with in the future. For now, we have Left 4 Dead 2 - a top-quality shooter with oodles of style. And for that, we should be truly grateful.

The newest chapter in the undead uprising now oozes with even more of the proven developer’s trademark personality and polish. If you are among those who think the sequel is coming too soon, prepare to eat your words like so many brains. Left 4 Dead 2 is everything a sequel should be: perfected, expanded, and an absolute riot.

Whether or not Left 4 Dead 2 is for you really depends on your level of exposure and affinity for the style of hardcore team-focused gameplay Valve is offering here. If you're still interested in the gameplay, then you're going to enjoy every aspect of the sequel since it's improved in all areas, from available game modes to strength of character and personality to replayability and its visual style. After playing, you'll find it impossible to go back to the first game.

Cool new weapons, likable new characters, dastardly new zombies, huge new levels with epic new finales. Doesn't quite deliver on all the promises, but it delivers a damn entertaining experience. It's a bigger version of Left 4 Dead, and it's hard to imagine how anyone could go back.

Left 4 Dead 2 is able to out-gore, out-scare and out-explode the original in just about every way. Instead of a very grey, kinda boring cityscape, you’re running through hotels, swamps, plantations, riverfronts, malls, abandoned highways, amusement parks… we could go on. The diversity is staggering and ultimately makes each movie-like campaign more exciting, tense and memorable than the first game.

Though it comes a mere one year after the original, Left 4 Dead 2 is a much better game and much better value. The new campaigns and unique game modes offer more variety and more longevity, while all the other additions and tweaks make the already great gameplay even more enjoyable. Even the AI has improved a little bit, and while they still aren't big on using pipe bombs or Molotovs and are prone to missteps, they seem to have a better grasp of tactics and will follow you a bit more closely.

Left 4 Dead 2 suitably improves on almost every aspect of the first game. Everything that was good about the original returns – the superb gameplay has now been augmented with melee weapons and additional equipment, all of which slot perfectly into the mix, as do the three new special infected. The campaigns are much more varied and distinct this time around, and although, once again, the graphics aren’t stellar, the increased gore and dismemberment effects look fantastic.

Whereas once we treated Left 4 Dead as a stopgap between Half-Lifes, this is no longer a weird little side project with modest expectations, and Valve is confident enough to play around with it, safe in the knowledge that you can trust your players. Left 4 Dead proved it. And whereas that game had a personality, this one is overflowing with it.
