Granted, most often this thinking is about how much better this promising game could have been if the developer had made some different design decisions. But it also makes you contemplate how much the little moments in life affect us, and how those little moments and their consequences are always colored by the bigger ones that loom large behind the scenes.

All of this should prove without a doubt that Journal is a video game that will work for some people, while others simply won’t see the point. As such, I cannot even attempt to score the game in a way that would jive with the general gaming populous. Some players won’t find themselves as emotionally invested, or perhaps struggle to care as I did, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Journal is far from perfect and the concept does fall flat on its face occasionally but the bits of it that work do work well, and more importantly for a game of this kind it never feels insincere. It’s not award-baiting in any way; this is clearly something the people behind it really wanted to make, and that alone should carry it for the people who are into this kind of interactive storytelling.
