Hell Let Loose is one of the hyped-up multiplayer FPS PC games last year. Set in WW2, two armies of 50 players each battle for control over strategic sectors on the map.
It piqued my interest because I grew up playing WW2 shooters like Allied Assault and the promise of a 50v50 chaos sounded fun. Getting into it is not really that hard, controls are intuitive and familiar; squad selection, as expected, is hit-or-miss; and above average graphics. It’s also best to play with friends or join a Discord server.
My general experience leans toward negative because of where I am. I have to choose between comms or ping. I can play on an English-speaking server but pings are above 250ms; or play on sub-80ms servers but with Cantonese/Mandarin-speaking players.
At its best, Hell Let Loose is a fun, tactical game. At its worst, it’s a subpar FPS confused between becoming a purely tactical, squad-based FPS like ARMA or a twitch, skill-based shooter like Valorant.
Despite these complaints, I still find myself playing the game a few hours each week. It's maybe because I still love WW2 shooters or because I feel invested in the game to just stop.
