For once, allowing for greater automation has improved a strategy game. Reducing micromanagement increases the interaction you have with your forces in Hearts of Iron III because you really feel like a political leader instead of a drone shuffling troops across a map. This is still tailored for experienced strat heads and wargamers with a lot of patience, but the game is more accessible than either of its predecessors and a great jumping-on point for new players who want to make the leap into a grand strategy epic.

It's a sure bet that Hearts of Iron III is one of if not the most detailed strategy games you've ever played. The depth of information and modeling in this game is as comprehensive as we've ever seen and it holds rich rewards for players who are willing to make the considerable investment into learning how to play. Even after two weeks, we feel we're just scratching the surface here.

One thing’s for certain though, this game is huge. Naturally, not everything can be covered in this review, but this game is big, it’s bad, and it will kick your butt if not taken seriously. It’s also not for everyone. If you’re into the likes of Civilization, you will probably like this game. If you’ve played the previous titles, or Europa Universalis, you will definitely like this game.
