An abundance of advertising, some overly restrictive design decisions, weak new modes, a major upping of the difficulty level, and significant performance issues might seem like a lot of potential hindrances for a game to overcome, and yet none of these problems are big enough to rob Guitar Hero III of the same brand of addictive fun that made the previous entries in the franchise so engaging.

Now that Harmonix has moved on, Guitar Hero 3 is a safe first entry into the franchise by the new management. The group didn't rock the boat too much and stuck with the tried and true formula of previous Guitar Hero games in most situations. The soundtrack is fantastic and the new online additions are going to take the Guitar Hero community to the next level. The lack of features on the PC are a disappointment, though.

Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock is the quintessential Guitar Hero game. It has everything the previous games had tweaked to peak performance, but it also carries the visuals of its PS2 brother and has a slightly weaker track list. However, the added battle mode, online play, and serious difficulty setting will do nothing but keep the hardcore fans rockin’ for days to come.
